This week we are in 2 Samuel 1-12. It is an interesting book. King David in a man. A sinning man.
But some things are, at face value, a mystery. Take for instance 2 Samuel 6. Why would God kill a man simply for putting his hand out to steady the Ark. Well, actually the Ark is in an oz cart. It's not supposed to be there in the first place. That begs the question, why would King David place the Ark in an oxen cart when he knew/should have known it didn't belong there in the first place. I think about this time, historical context comes into play. Previous to the Books of Samuel is Judges. The Israelites had been controlled by Judges for all those years. And to quote Judges 21:25, there was no King in Israel in those days and everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Wow, what has changed in a couple thousand years. So, it is not inconceviable to believe that King David had no idea and quite possible had never read the Law. He lived simply by faith. He had relationship with Christ but no knowledge. If we go back to Abraham, he also is the same. When God called him out of Ur of the Chaldees, Abraham's family apparently made idols for people to worship. Hence, God extends much grace and mercy to Abraham.
One things really stands out here, King David makes no excuses for his behaviour. Look at 2 Samuel 12. King David has been a very naughty boy. Caught up in adultery he tries to cover his tracks and has Uriah murdered. Nathan confronts him with his sin. No excuses. Just a simple I done it. "I have sinned against the Lord." Oh, that we would do the same. Christ is merciful. If we come to Him in repentance He will extend mercy.
