Sunday 8thy August 2010 - The cook-up.

Today was cook-up day in our house. Yesterday we were asked by the girls if we could have a family cook-up day. They wanted, and we agreed, to breakfast at dinner time. This is where the whole family gets in on the act.
But first there was an apple cake to make. As you can see Cathy couldn't wait to get into the action. We needed an apple peeled. At 3 she is a dab hand at peeling things.

But wait, we must first read the directions.
Michele to the rescue. She is our resident eyes. Mum is resting at this time.
Having read the directions, Cathy continues peeling the apple and Michele carefully measures out the milk. At this point we required 3/4 cup of milk. We don't have the kids nicked that cup a 3/4 cup measure. But we did have a one cup measuring jug and so Michele worked it out from there.
So, the cake is mixed, and apple peeled and sliced and the baking pan suitably buttered and papered. The kids must do the first of many taste tests. This time it is the mixers thingys.
The finished product. Obviously we didn't butter the baking dish correctly and so some remained in the dish. It was at about this time we discovered we had left out the eggs. Would the finished product taste nice?
Cathy decided it most certainly was yummy! So did Michele and myself.
By this time, Mum was out of bed. The children and myself had been out in the yard to do this and that. They rode the bikes around the yard and help pull weeds from the peas and broad beans. There followed a discussion about our dog that had recently died. They wanted to dig the dog up. I don't think I need to say what I thought of that idea.
Now it was time to put our evening meal together.
Scrambled eggs by Mum, sliced onions and mushrooms by Cathy and me, sausages by Michele, bacon by Cathy, Michele and me, hash-browns by me, and bubble and squeak by me.
Cathy checks out the camera and me.
"Is this my best side Dad?"
Cathy checks out the camera, Mum cracks eggs and Michele hands mum the eggs and supervises all.
Mum is very busy with the eggs. Now we are getting to the end of things. The eggs are the last to be done. All the rest is ready to go, almost.
Will we do it again? Yes, you better believe it. It is just the best having every one involved. Takes a little longer but is so worth the effort.
We started Michele off cooking when she was about 20 months. Cathy as soon as she could stand on a chair. She fell off the chair a few times, but it didn't stop her.
The family who plays together, or cooks together has fun together.
Till next time.........
